A Squirrely Story

"A Squirrely Story" is a slow-paced platforming game where the player creates their own platforms. The game is focused heavily on exploration and trinket collection, as the player needs to collect 4 out of the 8 trinkets to complete the game (although they can collect more if they so choose).

The project was developed by a 14 person team: all of whom are credited in the itch.io page located below. For my role in the project, I was a generalist programmer, but had a few key areas where most of my worked was done.

I had never worked in a team this big before (the biggest team I had worked in up until this project was a 6 person team) and so making sure communication was on point was a big key for me. As for the project itself, here is where most of my work was done: the trinket menu.

There are 8 total collectible trinkets in the game and during gameplay, the player can press "T" to open up this menu. The eight trinkets are the bell, the matchstick, the die, the marble, the screw, the bottlecap, the skateboard, and the cocktail umbrella. Upon starting the game, if the player looks at the menu, no trinkets will appear. Once the player collects their first trinket (we'll use the bell as an example), text will appear on screen saying "You collected your first trinket! Press T to view it." With just the bell collected, the player will only be able to see the bell on the shelf. The more trinkets you collect, the more the shelf gets filled up.

If you would like to play the game yourself, you can view it on itch.io here.
